A Nature Club
is functioning in the College to create awareness among
the students, teachers and the public at large and to develop
an infrastructure for effective environmental education
at grass root level. The club functions as an agency to
solve local environmental problems by co-ordinating with
Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations. In 2001-2002
an anti- plastic campaign was conducted followed by a drawing
competition on the “Deleterions effects of Plastics
to the Environment”. Prizes were distributed by the
Principal. In 2003-2004 the club bought several pots and
planted saplings to be kept in the veranda of the College.
In 2004-2005 the campaign against plastics especially plastic
bags was conducted in a more elaborate way. Dr. Shaju Thomas
of Nirmala College gave a thought-provoking talk on “Effects
of Plastics to the Environment”. The unit with all
the students gave a very warm and enthusiastic welcome to
the procession carrying sandal wood saplings for replantation
at Marayoor Sandal wood forest which depleted due to unhealthy
exploitation, thereby making the public aware about the
need of protecting the sandal wood forests in particular
and all the evergreen tropical forests of Kerala in general.
