Action may not always be happiness, but there is no happiness with out real action …

A well functioning N.S.S. Unit with 400 students volunteers exist in the College which aims at education through community service. 3 trained faculty members are rendering their service as programme officers. Volunteers are enrolled from the 1st and 2nd year Degree students. A student volunteer who has completed 240 hours of work, and attended a special camp during the course of two years, is eligible for N.S.S. certificate from the Mahatma Gandhi University. This certificate gives weightage to higher studies, and is an additional qualification for appointment in public service. Our N.S.S. Unit is functioning in a very satisfactory way by making students socially committed and helping them to understand their citizenship roles properly.

The National, Service Scheme aims at education through community service. It helps the students,

1. To work with and among the people.
2. To engage in creative and constructive social action.
3. To enhance one's knowledge of oneself and the community through a confrontation of reality.
4. To gain skills in the exercise of democratic leadership.
5. To gain skills in programme development.

Events Conducted by NSS:

2008-2009

Dr. A.U. Arun, Dr.Santha S. and Sri. Jinishlal Raj were appointed as programme officers of the NSS unit 2008-09. The first meeting of the NSS volunteers was held on 25^th August 2008 for the enrolment of new volunteers. Sri. Sanu K.B (III B.A. Politics), Sri. Renjith C. (III B.Sc. Mathematics) and Kum. Archana A.S. (III B.A. Politics) were appointed as NSS volunteer secretaries and Sri. Sanu K.B. and Sri. Renjith C. were nominated for University / Directorate level selection camp in the second meeting held on 25^th September 2008. The NSS unit 2008-09 was formally inaugurated by Dr. C. Radhakrishnan, Dean, MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery on 30th Aug.2008.

                        The first mini camp was conducted on 2nd Oct.2008 in the college. The NSS unit celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi day and cleaned the college campus. The first phase of training on Pain and Palliative Care Programme was conducted on that day. Sri. K. Radhakrishna Menon (Secretary, Consortium of Pain and Palliative Care Units in Ernakulam Dist.), Sri K.Lal (Trainer, Anwar Memorial Pain and Palliative Care Clinic, Aluva) and Sri.Yousaf A.K. (District Co-Coordinator, National Rural Health Mission) delivered lectures on pain and palliative care. 35 NSS volunteers have undergone 16 hrs training in pain and palliative care.

                     The third NSS volunteers’ meeting was held on 7th Oct. for the selection volunteers to participate in All Kerala Quiz competition and 16 hrs training programme in Pain and Palliative Care. Sri Dhanush B.Nair (I B.Sc. Botany and Sri. Rakhil P.R. (III B.Sc. Physics) participated in the All Kerala Quiz competition conducted by the Consortium of Pain and Palliative Care Units in Ernakulam Dist. on 11th Oct.2008. A meeting of the NSS volunteers was held on 18th Nov, to decide the venue of the special camp and to discuss about the legal literacy programme of Taluk Legal Services Committee. The legal literacy programme was conducted for the Second year Degree students on 15th Oct.2008 in the college by the NSS unit in association with the Taluk Legal Services Committee. Advocates Sri.Shani  Sebastian,Sri. Babu Joseph,Sri. B. Regukumar, Sri. K.M.Shamsudheen. Sri.C.P.Thomas,Sri. M. U.Devassykutty, Smt. Sunitha, Smt. C.S. Saritha delivered lectures on various legal matters viz. Traffic Rules, Consumer Protection etc.  The NSS volunteers raised funds for National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH) and observed Communal Harmony Campaign and the Flag Day on 25^th Nov 2008 with the objective of spreading the message of communal harmony and national integration. In connection with this, a rally was organized for spreading the message of communal harmony and national integration .Sri. Joy C.George ((Principal, St.Peter’s College, Kolenchery) handed over the pluck cards to the volunteers.

                     Sri. Sanu K.B. (III B.A. Politics), Sri. Renjith C. (III B.sc. Mathematics), Kum Archana A.S. (III B.A. Politics), Kum. Nibitha K.G. ((III B.A. Politics)   attended the Volunteer Secretaries’ Training camp held at M.A. College, Ramapuram from 5th Dec.2008 to 7th Dec 2008.

                      The Special Camp (Seven day) was conducted from 20^th Dec. 2008 to 26^th Dec 2008 at Govt.V.H.S.S. Iringole, Perumbavoor. The camp was inaugurated on

 Dec 20th, 2009.The first session was registration of the participants which was started at 2.30 p.m. The inauguration of the camp was at 4.30 p.m. Sri. Kuriakose Chennakkadan, (Chairman, St.Peter’s College Trust, Kolenchery) chaired the inaugural session. Smt. Isha Teacher (Municipal Chairperson, Perumbavoor), Sri. T.V.Padmanabhan (Ward Member),Smt Prasanna( Principal .Govt.V.H.S.S. Iringole, Perumbavoor). Sri Satheesan E.V (PTA President) gave felicitation address. On Dec 21 Sunday from 9.00 a.m. to 1 p.m, the N.S. S volunteers cleaned the school campus. In the afternoon session Sri Paipra Damanan (Director Vidya Vanitha College Muvutupuza) delivered lecture on “Kudumba Bhadradha”.

                     In the evening session Smt Aji C. Panicker (Lecturer, M.A, college, Kothamangalam) delivered lecture on “Iringole Kauvinde Pradhaniyam. On the third day (Dec 22, Monday) from 9 a. m.to1.00 p.m. Volunteers cleaned   the Iringole Kavu, made it a plastic free zone. In the afternoon session Sri Anil Kannoor delivered lecture on communication. From 6.30 p.m.to 7.30 p.m a debate on “Old Age Home –Is it a curse or Boon”   was organized. All N.SS volunteers actively participated in the debate. On Dec 23, Tuesday 9a.m.to 1-00 p.m. volunteers cleaned canal. A medical Camp (for Eye, Ear and Cancer detection) was conducted in the afternoon in association with MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery and Lake shore Hospital, Ernakulam. Sri C.V Jacob (Secretary, St.Peter’s College Trust, Kolenchery) inaugurated the medical camp. About 65 patients attended the camp. From 2.00 p.m.  to 5.00 p.m., Sri Jijimon ( C.I. , Puthencruz Police Station ) delivered lecture on Road Safety rules. At 6.30 p.m. Janamythri Suraksha Samithi performed a drama titled ‘Nammalonnu’. On 24th Dec., Wednesday, from 9.00a.m. to 1.00 p.m. N.S.S. volunteers made compost pit, garden etc. in the school compound. In the afternoon session, from 2.00 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sri V.J. Jose delivered lecture on environment From 6.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. N.S.S. volunteers celebrated Christmas with pomp and gaiety. On Dec.25th, from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., N.S.S. volunteers cleaned the Lalithakala Academy campus. From 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. various Christmas competitions were held. The N.S.S. camp came to an end with valedictory session. Sri Joy C. George (Principal, St.Peter’s College, Kolenchery) chaired the session in which the Keynote address was delivered by Smt.Isha Teacher (Municipal Chairperson, Perumbavoor).  Sri. T.V.Padmanabhan (Ward Member),Smt Prasanna ( Principal .Govt.V.H.S.S. Iringole, Perumbavoor) and Sri Satheesan E.V (PTA President) gave felicitation address. The camp was successfully wound up on Dec. 26th Friday. On that day the N.S.S. volunteers cleaned the school campus in the morning. There was also a session for evaluation and feed back. At 10.00 a.m. the meeting of the N.S.S. volunteers was held for the evaluation and feed back of the camp. The volunteers were given an opportunity to express their views about the camp. The N.S.S volunteers expressed their satisfaction and happiness in the conduct of the camp.

                      On 4^th January, 2009, The N.S.S. unit, in association with the College Union and Puthencruz Police Station organized Road Safety Awareness Programme and human chain. Students distributed broachers of traffic rules to drivers and readout the road safety slogan. The second mini camp was conducted from Jan 31 to Feb1 in the college. On Jan 31st, the volunteers cleaned the college ground in the morning. In the afternoon session, Advocate Tom Jose (President, Federation of Consumer Organisation of Kerala) delivered lecture on Consumer Protection rules. On Feb 1st A Team from Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya, Edappally delivered lectures on ‘Self management for Stress free living’.

2007-2008

NSS unit conducted a 'Ten day Camp' at janaseva Boy's Home, Aluva during the Onam Holidays. In this camp, a Medical Camp' for Chikun Guinea disease was organised jointly with Nedumbasssery Panchayath and Janaseva Boy's HOme, Aluva.The camp was inanugurated by Sri.C.V.Jacob, Director, Inernational Airport, Nedumbassery. Around 250 people from different wards of Nedumbassery Panchayath attended the camp. A bio-agriculture land was developed for;the members of Janaseva Boy's Home. Two mini camps were also conducted. The main acticviities done under these prorammes were cleaning the college campus, the hostel, the hospital and grooming of ;the botanical garden on the college. Blood Donation Forum of NSS donated blood to the poor patients of MOSC Medical College, Kolenchery as a part of its social commitment. Legal Literacy  awareness classes for the 2nd year degree studetns were conducted jointly with Bar Association of Perumbavoor.

2006-2007

The activities of the NSS unit had an auspicious beginning with the inauguration of the third unit  by the Hon'ble syndicate member Prof.Jorry Mathai. Two mini camps were conducted during this period.  Volunteers were participated in the celebrations organised in connection with Gandhi Jayanthi at Maharaj's College, Ernakulam. Under the aegis of  our NSS unit a class on Law awareness was conducted by the Bar association of Perumbavoor. A class on Chicken Guinea was organised for NSS volunteers and cleaning of college premises and city were conducted in connection with that awareness programme.   The workers of 'Childline' took classes for all NSS volunteers at the behest of the Hon'ble district Collector and later the volunteers engaged classes on 'Childline' activities for students of 36 schools in Ernakulam District.   All the  NSS volunteers abstain from food for a single time and collected a sum of Rs. 3000/- and the the amount is donated for  the construction of  100th NSS Bhavan. A ten day  camp was conducted st St.Thomas L.P.School, Nellad, from December 22nd and 31st which was inaugurated by M.M.Monayi, M.L.A., Kunnathunadu. The major activities of the camp included the construction of 2 Km road, Library renovation, construction of  new school library. A nature study tour was also arranged in the camp.

2005-2006

Last academic year (2005-2006) was bright and eventful for the unit. One of the worth mentioning achievements in the current year was the ten days camp at St. Mary’s H. S. Kombanadu to construct a home for the very poor family of Late Jaison Joseph who himself was an N.S.S. Volunteer, spending about one lakh rupees. The N.S.S. unit also constructed a rural road of 1 K.M. length and cleaned the near by Canal. Free computer training programme was given to 100 N.S.S. Volunteers. Selected volunteers participated in the volunteers training camp and the nature study camp at Eravikulam National Park and Chinnar Wild Life Sanctuary. The programme Officers attended an Orientation programme for 10 days at Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery, a seminar on Disaster Management at Fort Kochi and another training programme organised by the Kerala Legal Service Authority at High Court, Kochi.

2004-2005

In the 2004-2005, 26 volunteers attended a 10 day camp organized by Mahatma Gandhi University at Nalpathimala and the Programme Officer of this College Mr. K. V. Venugopalan functioned as the Camp Director. Blood donation to the needy patients were done on a regular basis throughout the year.

2003-2004

In the year 2003-2004 Aikkaranadu South Village was adopted by the N.S.S., for developmental works. Environment/wasteland Development and Conservation was continued in this year also and a camp was organized for this purpose. Three additional camps were organized to work on health and family welfare. Awareness programmes were conducted among the public about ‘Dengue Fever’ and the ‘Sucidal Tendancies’ among the student. A poster exhibition on drugs and alcohol was arranged in the College and Mr. Soji. Mathew gave a talk on the subject. Another poster exhibition on sex education and an awareness programme among school children about Child line and its activities were also held. Through all these Philanthropic activities the N.S.S. units declared their commitment to the society.

2002-2003

In the academic year 2002-2003 the N.S.S. Unit conducted a good number of social activities which were very beneficial to the ordinary people in the society. One of the main projects of N.S.S. in that year was the conduct of a 10 day camp in an interior village, Thammanimattam near Kolenchery. The major activity in the camp was the construction of an 800 mtrs. long new road and the maintenance of an already existing old road. 85 student volunteers attended the camp. In the same year N.S.S. took the initiative in spreading the message of waste land development and conservation as an environmental activity. For this mission 2 camps were organized and gave priority to the planting of 180 saplings. The volunteers also had shown interest in some health and family welfare programmes such as cleaning of the Government Hospital, Kadayiruppu. A blood grouping camp was conducted in October, 2002 and a population education camp was also held. A seminar on AIDS awareness was also arranged.
