Teaching Experiences

  • Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology at St. Peter’s College Kollencherry from 22nd December 2004 onwards and also from 3rd July 2003 to 23rd July 2003.
  • Engaged in teaching students and conducting practical at Masters level (M.Sc and M.Phil) in Marine Biology, Ecology, Fish and Fisheries and Aquaculture, from 23rd July 1998 to 3rd june 2003 in Department of Marine Biology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, School of Marine Sciences Cochin University of Science and Technology.

On Board Experience

  • Participated in Two Oceanographic cruises (45 days each) (Cruise-220 & Cruise -226) in FORV Sagar Sampada to collect samples from Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
  • Daily onboard experience during 1997 July to 1998 June, when I worked as Senior Research Fellow in an Ad-hoc project titled ‘Code end selectivity of trawl nets for finfish and shellfish off Cochin, South West Coast of India, in Central Institute of Fishery Technology, Cochin.

Current Research works

  • Detailed studies on the molluscan biodiversity (Taxonomy) of inland as well as coastal waters of Kerala ( a joint venture with Prof(Dr). K.Y.Mohammed Salih)
  • Preparation of biochemical composition chat of molluscs.
  • Bioaccumulation of heavy metals and pesticides in different trophic levels

A Project titled ‘Physiological and biochemical stresses and histological study of coir colouring industrial effluents (Rodamine – B) on Villorita cyprinoids’ has submitted to University Grants Commission.

Title of the Thesis: Biology, Experimental culture and Toxicity studies of Villorita Cyprinoides(Gray) in Cochin Estuary.


Objectives of the thesis

  1. Systematics, Distribution and Habitat of Villorita Sp. (black clam) in Cochin Estuary and factors affecting their distribution.
  2. Age and Growth of the species (black clam) from both culturing and natural environment (freshwater and estuary).
  3. Allometric Relationship of species Villorita sp (black clam).
  4. Biochemical Composition of the clam.
  5. Gonado - Somatic Index of the species.
  6. Hydrographic parameters of the sampling stations and its impact on clam.
  7. Reproductive biology, factors affecting reproduction, thermal shock, fecundity, induced breeding and larval rearing.
  8. Effect of Coir retting and coir colouring material on clam bed.
  9. Filtration rate of the species under varying salinities and under heavy metal stress.
  10. Oxygen requirements under different conditions and seasons, viz. temperature, salinity, starvation and toxic stress.
  11. Impact of Thannermukkom Barrier (Salinity barrier) in the ecology of clam bed, growth, biochemical composition and reproduction of Villorita cyprinoides (Black clam).
