BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of Commerce was established in 1981 with B.com course. M.com was started in the year 1995. The Department is located in built-up area of 780 sq.m with separate computer lab and Department library.

• Department library with 1400 books, 170 project reports/Dissertations, 5 Journals and 1 News paper.
• Separate computer lab with 3 Desk top computers, 1 Lap top computer, 2 printers, 1 Overhead projector, 1 Television, Independent telephone connection, Internet connection, Department is connected with EPABX

Academic facilities :

• Compulsory seminar for U.G and P.G levels, assignments, peer teaching, computer aided teaching, OHP presentation, demonstration classes etc.
• Dr.Reji.M.A has submitted a proposal for a minor project to UGC titled as " A Study On Sickness of Small-Scale Industries in Ernakulam District".
• Mr.Saji T.G has proposed a minor project on "The Economic Impact of Cochin International Airport on the Lives of the People of Nedumbasseri".

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Special Achievements :
A good number of students are qualified Chartered Accountants, MBA"s, Cost Accountants, Lecturers and HSS Teachers.
A significant number of B.com students qualify CAT and MAT and going for MBA in premier institutions.

Awards and Scholarships :
Prof.K.J.Mathew Memorial endowment fund for topers in B.Com degree course.

Extension Programmes :
An appreciable number of Commerce students are actively engaged in the activities of the National Service Scheme and National Cadet Corps of the college. Our second year B.com student Mr. Shihab M was the NSS voluntary secretary during 2005-06.

Dr.M.A.Reji got a UGC Minor Research Project titled ' Women empowerment through self help gourps..

Faculty Development Programme:
Mr.Jory Mathai., Mrs.Heleny.M.Y.,Dr. Reji M.A., Mrs. Santha S., Mr. Venugopalan K.V., Mr. Santhosh kumar and Mr.John K Mathew have attended refresher courses in commerce. Mr. Mathew Jacob has attended orientation programme.

Dr.Reji.M.A completed his Ph.D under the faculty improvement programme of the UGC. Mr. Venugopalan K.V, Mrs Santha S, Mr.Santhosh Kumar S and Mr. John K Mathew are doing Ph.D under the Faculty improvement Programme.

Smt. Helaney M Y obtained M.phil degree from Madurai Kamaraj University and Ms Ronia Kuruvilla obtained Mphil degree from M.G University.
Mr. Mathew jacob and Mr. Saji T.G are doing part-time Ph.D

All the faculty members have attended seminar at national and international level.

Membership in Academic and other bodies :
Mr Jory. Mathai is currently serving as a member of the Syndicate of the Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Chairman of the Core Committee of Travel and Tourism Studies (PG and UG), a Member of Boards of Studies of Kannur University and Calicut University and the Sub editor of the Indian Commerce Bulletin. He is a question paper setter in Kerala and Calicut Universities and member of Board of Studies in Calicut and Kannur Universities.

Teachers of the Department were actively involved in the Carriculam revision for B,com Degree Course in 1998-99 and for the M,com Degree Course in 2001-02 at the University level.

Mrs. Helany M.Y is a members in the Board of Studies at the UG level and a Subject expert - New Course Inspection Committee.

Academic and Personal Counselling :
The Department follows tutorial system and 20 students from each class have been allotted to a tutor. He looks after the academic as well as the personal performance of the students under him. Further, one faculty member Smt. Helaney M .Y is deputed as student's counsellor of the Department.

2006-2007

Heleney M.Y., Santha S., and Mathew Jacob attended a National Seminar on Vat at Govt.College, ManimalaKunnu.(27th  and 28th Feb.2007.)Venugopal K.V., Santhoa S., and Santhosh Kumar S were submitted their thesis.

2007-2008

The activities of the association 2007-2008 was inaugurated by Mr.Sajeev F.C.A. He made the kewnote addresson 'Current Trend in Commerce Education". Commerce students won the IInd prize in the 'Floral Competition'organised by the Students Union of the College in connection with Onam celebration and won the First Prize in the 'Procession Completion' conducted by the M.G.University Union in connection with the closing ceremony of 'Keralotsavam-2007.

2008-2009

Activities of the association for the academic year were inaugurated by Dr.C.RAdhakrishnan, Dean, MOSC Medical College. Kolenchery.
