BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of English started functioning in 1964, the very year in which the college was started. Prof. P.C. Markose was the founder Head of the Department. Eminent Professors like Prof. Sakunthala David, Prof. K. Thomas Mathai, Prof. P.M. Mathai, Prof. V.M. Joseph, Prof. Thomas Thomas, Prof. Sunny Mathew, Prof. M.J. Daniel, Prof. P.T. Mathew, Prof. M.V. Jacob, Prof. K.P. Kuriakose, Prof. T.P. Peter, Prof. Cherian Petrose served the Department as faculty members.

Learning Recourses

The Department has a Library and a Media room. Students can make use of the audio and video systems (Recorders, Mixers, Television, CD Player etc) and public address system for their curricular and extra curricular activities. CDs of the classics and Shakespearean plays are shown periodically.

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Awards and Scholarships :
Award given by former HOD Prof.V.M.Joseph to the top scorer in B.A English Examination of M.G. University.

Extension Programmes :
Special coaching given to academically backward students after 3.30 PM.

Published Papers :

  1. Ms. Reeja Jose P. presented a paper on the Poetry of Sylvia Plaths in a National Seminar. She has also published an article on R.K. Narayan "The Decolonised self in The Vendor of Sweets" in an anthology of essays in Indian Writing.
  2. 'ENGLITT', the journal published by the department to enhance the literary taste of the students.
  3. Presented a paper  ‘The Existential Angst of the Heroes in T.V.Chandran’s Movies’ at the seminar on  'Film, Culture and Heritage' conducted by CUSAT during October 2007.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Extra curricular Activities :

  1. 'English Association' and its activities.
  2. Staging Shakespearean Plays.
  3. Publishing the Journal "Englitt'.
  4. Mr. Bashi Paul is the coordinator of the Music Club of the college.
  5. Mr. Jayson Thomas is the Associate N.C.C. Officer. He is also the coordinator of the Adventure Club.
  6. Mr. Jain Mathew was the Program Officer of N.S.S. He was the editor of the "PETRONIAN".
  7. Mrs. Reeja Jose P. is the Teacher coordinator of Quiz Club.
  8. Mrs. Jessy James was the Teacher coordinator of the Women's Forum.

ACTIVITIES

2006-2007

The activities of the English Literary Association were inaugurated by Dr. Elizabeth  Koshi, Faculty, Govt Arts College, Tripunithura. Students presented a re-adaptation of the Shakespeare tragedy ’JULIUS CAESAR’ as part of the inaugural function.

2007-2008

Different activities were conducted in the department for the students.

2008-2009

The activities of ;the association during this academic year were formally inaugurated on 1st September woo8 by Prof. Cherian Petrose, students exhibited skit and tableau based on the abuse of mobile phones. The volume of literary publication 'Englitt' named BRI-COLAGE was released by the 'English Association'.
