BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of History was started in June 1970. The founder Head of the Department was Prof M.T Kurian. Other founder member of the History faculty, vis. Dr.P.P Narayanan Namboodiri, Prof K.C.Philip, Prof .K.P Kuriakose and Prof Chandy John have played a great role in making the Department Excellent in the teaching-learning process.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED

Courses Offered :
B A History ( Main), Economics and Political Science (Subsidiary Subjects)

Eligibility :
Any student who has passed the Higher Secondary examination is eligible for admission to the course.

Students Strength : 40 per batch

Learning Resources:

  1. The Department possesses a Departmental library, having nearly 200 books.
  2. Computer facility having multimedia computer with internet connection.
  3. CDs on historical studies are also available.

Academic Facilities :

  • Seminars are conducted on subjects related to history under the auspices of the History Association.
  • Project works are undertaken by the staff and students. There is an on going project with the title "Kadamattom Church - a National Heritage". There are 200 completed copies of students project words in the Department.
  • Personal guidance and counselling are given to the students.

Archaeological Museum :

The department is maintaining an archaeological Museum with a good number of historical charts, sculptures, coins. Stone tools, ancient agricultural implements , manuscripts etc

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

Special Achievements:

Mr.A.M.Paulose brought laurels to the Department by securing 1st rank in B.A history in 1975, when the college was affiliated to the University of kerala. Miss Binu K.T had secured 3rd rank in the BA History Examinations conducted by the mahatma Gandhi university in April 2003. The average success rate of the students is 90% to 100 % but students in 2002-2005 batch secured 100 % pass in the University examinations.

Awards and Scholarships :

  1. Porf.Chandy John Memorial Endowment lecture and distribution of awards to toppers in Final Year B.A History Examination
  2. Prof.K.P.Kuriakose Memorial Endowment Award to the best out going student of the Department of History, every year.

Faculty Development Programme:

Prof.Joy C.George is doing research (Ph.D) in the topic "Vaikom Satyagraha and Dalits - An examination of the Emerging Dalit Discourse".

Smt.Hema is currently pursuing her Ph.D in the topic" Native State of Cochin - Socio Economic Reforms and Development form 1792-1947".

Smt.K.R.Hema, presented a paper on the topic "Fall of Kunjalis" on the National Seminar jointly organised by the P.G. Department of History, U.C.College and ICHR New Delhi.

Alumini :

The former students of the Department have formed an Alumini Association.They meet periodically and co-operate with curricular and co-curricular activities of the Department. A good number of the alumni are well placed as Government servants, Management Professionals, Professors, Lawyers and Businessmen. The present Principal of the college is a former student of the Department.

Activities

2006-2007

Former Head of the Department Fr.O.J.Jacob Inaugurated the History Association and department has published a department magazine titled "HIstoria" with the collections of the literary works of the students. 

2007-2008

Inauguration of the association was held on 10th October 2007 by Prof.M.T.Kurian, Former Head of the Department of History was the Chief Guest. Prof.Joy C.George released the Dept. magazine 'Historia'- The Dynamic path of Traditioin.

2008-2009

World Environment day was celebrated by the members of the association. Principle inaugurated the programme by planting seedlings in the college campus. Career Guidance Seminar was arranged for the final year degree students, Sri. C.K.Ramachandran was the resource person. World population day was celebrated by the association Prof.George K Issac presented a paper on 'The problems of increasing population in the world and conducted an elocution competition. Association conducted an AIDS awareness programme and formed a blood donation forum .
