BRIEF HISTORY
The Department of Malayalam
was started in 1964, the year in which the college started
functioning. Prof. M.Y. Yohannan was the founder head of
the Department, Prof. P.K. Issac, Prof. K.T. Thomas, Prof.
Varghese S. Nedunthallil, Rev. Fr. K.P. Geevarghese, Prof.
K.K. Jose, Prof C.J. Varghese, Prof. T.C. Philip, Prof.
S. Thangappan Nair (Sanskrit) had served the Department
earlier. Under graduate course in Malayalam language and
the literature started in 1967 and Post graduate course
in Malayalam was started in 2002.

Courses:
B.A : Malayalam Language & Literature
(Main) with Electronic Media and Literature as elective
subject.
M.A : (Self Financing)
Eligibility :
B.A: Any student who has passed the Higher
Secondary examination is eligible for admission to the course.
M.A:
BA Malayalam with 45%marks in part three main subjects
or 50% of marks in Part II Malayalam.
BA/B.Sc Students having 50% marks in Part II Malayalam
Student Strength :
B.A. : 40 per batch
M.A. : 30 per batch
Learning Resources :
- The Departmental Library is enriched with 1000 copies
of book and 10 journals.
- The Department has a computer lab with 4 computers and
1 printer for the study of elective paper " Electronic
Media & Literature ".
- Reading room for the students of the Department.
- With the help of the LCD projector, classical arts forms,
folk lore are presented in the Media room.
- Study tour to various cultural and historically important
places, and media centres.
- Seminars on Folk lore, cinema, martial arts.

Thrust areas of Research :
Department is trying for Research Centre. Thrust areas are
Grammar and Linguistics, Modern Poetry, Fiction, Folklore,
Psychology, Feminism, Cultural Studies.
Projects- Ongoing and Completed:
Conducted 10 Courses of UGC sponsored and funded comprising
students Teachers and Officers from various Departments
in each batch with 20 members.
Books Published
Dr.N.K.Mary wrote a book titled 'Malayalam
Grammatical Theories after Kerala Panineeyam'

Ms.G. Preethy had secured first rank in the B.A. degree
examinations of the M.G. University held in April 1994.
Ms. Ancy Issac got 2nd rank in the B.A. Malayalam in 1998.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
Alumni :
The Alumni of the Department cooperates with the activities
of the St. Peter's College Alumni and Super Annuated Staff
Association. Prominent among our alumni are H.G. Dr. Yohanon
Mar Miletheos, Bishop of Thrissur, Smt. Gracy the famous
story writer, Smt. Molly Abraham, the former president of
Ernakulam Dist. Panchayat, Sri. Jayakumar Chengamanad the
Vailoppilly award winner etc.
UGC Programme :
U.G.C. sponsored Simple Sanskrit speaking course was conducted
under the auspices of the department during 2002-03. 10
batches comprising students, teachers, office staffs and
the public (20 students in the each batch) were imparted
training in Sanskrit speaking.

ACTIVITIES
2006- 2007
Prof.M.N.Vijayan
inaugurated the Malayalam Association on 14 July 2006. Manuscript
magazine of the Department ‘Anjali’ was released
by Dr.Ajayakumar, Lecturer, Sanskrit University, Kalady.
Dr.V.C. Haris well known writer and lecturer delivered a
talk on 8 August 2006 about Hisohima in connected
the with remembrance of Hiroshima Day. P.Surendarun distinguished
writer released the book of Suresh Keezhillam. ‘Kathir’-Chuvar
Pathram was released on 21 July 2006 and published at regular
intervals.
2007- 2008
Association
activities for the academic year was inaugurated by
Sri.P.R.Harikumar, HOD, Dept. of Malayalam of Sree
Sankara College, Kalady. Association has organised a
poem writing competition for school and college students
in association with Mathrubhoomi Daily.
2008- 2009
Association
for the year was inaugurated by Smt.Suni Joy Oliappuram,
Lecturer, Govt.College, Tripunithura. The Kerala Kala
Mandalam Artists, performed the classical art Kathakali-
Kalyanasouganthikam. In connection with this, there was
a Kathakali Aswathanakalari. 'Anjali' the manuscript
magazine of the department was released by Dr.Scaria
Zacharia. Perumbara the wall Newspaper was released by
Dr.Rohini Nair, the first Paraplane Rider is Asia. |
