Department of Library Science

The Department of Library and Information Science, St. Peter’s College, Kolenchery was established in the year 2014 as the first and the only one aided academic department in Library and Information Science under M G University. Now the department functions as a full-fledged academic department of St.Peter’s College, Kolenchery. The Department provides learning opportunities in concepts and technologies related to diverse areas in Library and Information Science discipline. The department strives to make the students to be better library professionals, information scientists and Documentation officers so that they should be capable to satisfy varying information needs of the user community they serve. In order to achieve this goal the department offers lively practical sessions in the state of the art central library on daily basis. Also internship programmes and visits to various types of libraries are organized to make them acquainted with the system and services of different types of libraries and Information centres. In order to cope up with today’s technologically and professionally competent information explosion era, the department provides opportunities for the students to participate in workshops, seminars and conferences both in online and offline mode. The department organizes international, national and regional seminars, workshops and conferences on topics of contemporary importance to nurture the professional skills and knowledge of Library and Information Science community.
Aiming to mould the students better citizens with social commitment, the department encourages and guides the students to carry out various co-curricular and extension programmes such as Library Setting up Programmes, financial assistance, provision of needful things, interactive sessions and cultural programmes for different category of people such as tribal group, specially abled and physically abled ones, old aged people and inmates of jail. Events such as competitions, cultural programmes, book introduction programmes, reading week celebrations, poster displays and video making on topics such as human rights, environment, women empowerment, IPR, social justice etc. are being conducted for school and college students and other groups. Festivals are also being celebrated in the department occasionally.
